HP 2133 WebCam & Microphone on Linux

HP2133 Linux SUSE 10
A friend of mine recently purchased the HP2133 and has been having problems with the webcam and microphone. Even though it is a fine machine (Keyboard, Screen & Build quality )it was installed with Linux. I am not sure why these machines are sold to the general public with Linux, and more to the point why the driver for the webcam is missing.

After a few hours of research I managed to find the correct driver.

webcam
Install this driver,

goto
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/drivers:/webcam/SLE_10/i586/

locate this driver uvcvideo-kmp-default-r260_2.6.16.46_0.12-1.1.i586.rpm ( 4th from bottom)

Double click on this and it will automatically activate the auto install program.
To test the installation, if you are like me use skype and test out the webcam using options>webcam>test.

in built microphone
I couldn't get the internal microphone to work on the machine. However using the input jacks for microphone and headphones on the left side, I was able to successfully make a skype call.
There are two settings that you will need to focus on.

  • Mic Boost
Double click on the volume icon on the tool bar ( bottom right side) .
Click on Edit>Preferences>. Toggle on Microphone & Mic Boost.
  • On Volume control click on Capture and increase the volume settings. Make sure that the microphone is not on mute.

  • Skype
  • pick Options>Sound Devices>

Ensure your settings are similar to these.

Sound in = Default device (default)
    Sound out=Default devive (default)
    Ringing = Default devive (default)

    Then finally reboot.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks so much !

WEbCam is working just fine now. However, no chance to get the mic running... Nor in Skype neither with the available Linux recording tools.
    Any other hint ?

    Microphone & Skype & 2133 & Linux

    Hi,

I am glad I helped out. I couldn't get the in built Microphone to work unfortunately. Therefore I am thinking the driver for this is still unavailable. I searched all over the place and couldn't find a thing. However the Microphone sockets (on the left side) do work, if you play around with the Mic Boost settings. I must admit I almost gave up on the thing until I decided to reboot due to an unrelated issue. When I did that the mic (using the external head set ) in fact worked.
    Good Luck.

    2133 webcam driver

Hi. I did not have the same success :(

When I try and install this driver I have the error message:

    Dependecy Resolution failed
There are no installable providers of kernel(default:kernel==2d9703983fdda294 for uvcvideo-kmp-default-r260_2.6.16.46_0.12-1-1-i586[Local packages]

    any ideas please??

I saw on another forum that one user had installed Suse 11 which has apparently the driver for the webcam. Can this simply be downloaded to the disk and executed under Suse10? Ot is an external CD drive (or big usb stick??)needed?

    thank you in advance

Upgrade from Suse 10 to 11

If you are not familar with Linux I would not recommend doing just for the sake of the camera. I would return the machine and ask the supplier to either upgrade it for you or ask for a MS Windows(Vista) version. If you are happy to do it yourself then you will need to download Version 11.1 from the SuSE website. Once you have done that you will need to burn to a CD I think you will need around 5 CDs to do that. Or alternatively if you are on a network then you could down load it from another PC on your network and then connect from your HP laptop to that machine and run the "UPGRADE" script. However if your network is poor or slow then just use the CD method. I am not sure if you can boot from a memory stick . You will need to check on forums for that. My gut feeling is you cannot.

You will need to pick the right version of SuSE Linux for HP 2133. If I was you I would check with the forum you mentioned to get the right version they used. Otherwise you could potentially mess up your HP. Goto either http://software.opensuse.org or http://download.opensuse.org or http://mirrors.opensuse.org/list/all.html which contains the full lists.
Once you get the right version burn Suse version 11.1 ( I think that is the lastest version) to your CD. Then taking the first CD , place the CD into the drive and set your HP to boot from the CD drive and reboot. Your HP will then automatically boot from the CD drive. To do this your will need to change the machine boot settings to do that. That is call the BIOS Boot order so the CD or DVD drive is listed first. At the moment it is set to C; drive so you will need to change it to point to your CD drive. Once you upgrade you will have to change it back again. I found this useful url on booting from CD drive. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/tipstricks/ht/bootcddvd.htm . Once you have done that pick "UPGRADE" and click through the installaion wizard. All the packages on your HP and the kernal will be upgraded and then finally reboot. If the installation was successfully you will get the webcam running and version 11.1 too!

I hope this helps you. Good luck.
